Consider comprehensive editing if you have finished your drafts and are thinking about publishing.
Comprehensive editors do a close read of your manuscript with an eye for sentence and paragraph structure, readying it for publication.
Comprehensive editing is usually carried out before publication, after multiple drafts. The editor uses Word’s track changes feature so you can see the changes made and accept or reject them as you see fit. This is your last stop before a final proofread and publication. It includes (but is not limited to):
Fiction
- Improving readability and flow
- Providing editorial comments
- Tightening dialogue and looking at authenticity, flow, and tagging
- Clarifying blocking as the characters move through the scene
- Addressing repetitive or misused words and eliminating wordiness
- Eliminating “information dump”
- Pointing out missed opportunities to “show” rather than “tell”
- Commenting on chapter sequencing, pace, scene transitions, and flow
- Ensuring consistency of character, verb tense, and point of view
- Correcting spelling, grammar, punctuation, and syntax
Non-fiction
- Improving readability and flow
- Providing editorial comments
- Addressing repetitive or misused words and eliminating wordiness
- Commenting on sequencing, pace, and flow
- Correcting spelling, grammar, punctuation, and syntax
- Limited fact-checking
- Ensuring consistency of verb tense
- Correcting formatting of in-text citations and list of works cited (APA, MLA, etc.)
At the end of the comprehensive edit, you will receive a Word document addressing each of the above elements, along with comments suggesting next steps.
